I need to find a reliable, nice looking, car in the Detroit Metro area for $2000 or lower; here's why.. -_-

I have a friend who needs a car to go to work because her mom won't do it and she's been getting rides with friends that work there. Now, her parents won't help her buy or insure a car for her and me, being her car enthusiast friend, I'm now her "only hope".

What sucks about this whole thing, is that this girl happened to be one that I liked for some while and quite honestly, still have some feelings for(being human can be a bitch sometimes), and I've helped her a helluva lot more times than I should have over the past two years with boyfriends, ex-boyfriends, drama, life. Suffice to say, this sucks.

So I need at least 10 reliable compact cars, sedans and coupes only, with mileage between 100-150k, that are reliable enough and easy enough to maintain, and cheap to insure for no more than $2000.

Something like this. Relatively low miles and that rust is pretty common. You could easily get it below $2000 http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/474683…

Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla or Echo, Kia, Hyundai, etc. Do you really need help with this?

Edit: if you do really need help, use Autotempest.com to search with your criteria across CL, Autotrader, and eBay.

Well insurance-wise, I know nothing, I figured some Oppos might have some experience with this kinda problem?

I think I'd have to go with the Saturn from that lot. Thanks.

No windowless Astro? The Saturn is a solid choice though.

What about a high mileage Accord Coupe with V6 and 230k miles?

With the exception of some diesels and maybe some FJ's, I wouldn't touch a car with over 200k miles as a daily driver. Plus, the insurance might be higher on these because people like to steal Honda's for some reason. Just remember, on a 200k mile car, just because the engine is good, doesn't mean the accessories are.

Insurance is based on many factors - driver, vehicle value, vehicle desirability (ie how often it gets stolen), risks associated with the home address of the owner, and exposure risk for the insurance provider. The best way to get cheap insurance is to shop around.

I've actually been refused a home insurance quote because the provider was overexposed in my area and literally did not want my business.

In this case, we're talking about an 18 year-old brand new driver with no experience. So aside from shopping around, because there's no doubt in my mind her insurance will be very expensive, could we perhaps generalize what cars would best suit her based on those factors?

Reliable you say? Can't kill a Panther and insurance is dirt cheap.

Saturn SL and SC models. Their plastic so they're gonna look clean, and their values are in the toilet because of Saturn being dead and because they're 12+ year old economy cars. Their like cockroaches when it comes to reliability. And most were probably owned by old people if they're first owner cars.

My Astra was owned by an older gentleman who was an Engineer. That might say something about your hunch.

Oof. That's pretty much a guarantee an insurance company will bend you over. The "best" car would be an older, mid-sized Japanese sedan like a Camry.

Yeah, that'll do, especially if your friend can drive stick. I'm not so keen on Honda's automatic gearboxes because their cars are so much better without them.

Your state's pretty YOLO regarding car inspections, so that helps.

Skip V6 anything, because that's just asking for trouble. If you're looking at Hondas, make sure they've had timing belt services done and look for rust on the rear wheel well.

Camry Coupe, needs some cosmetic body work - http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/cto/472695…

Generic beige-mobile - http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/468751…

200k miles, but it's honestly so clean I'd overlook that. It's also had the timing belt service - http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/470582…

An old Accord, Camry, anything that's painfully common in your area so that repairs and parts are cheap will help control insurance costs. It doesn't have to be Japanese, a Focus or whatever could be a good idea as well.

problems:

1: you live in Michigan, highest insurance in the nation. detroit metro area being even worse.

2: Michigan has winters, winters=salt=rust (I live in Idaho btw)

3: finding something with under 200,000 miles is going to be hard, (I was amazed I got my car that has 170,000 miles on it for 2300 bucks).

That being said, go for some sort of 90's Subaru wagon or something, there are a ton of them.
